Meetings can be exhausting, especially when they are about the struggles and challenges faced by you, your family, or children that you care for.
Even meetings that go well can be emotionally exhausting. Meetings that don't go well can cause so much stress and panic, particularly when professionals do not take you seriously or do not properly explain processes and procedures.
We hear feedback that parents and carers can feel overwhelmed and anxious before, during and after meetings. They often feel like they have not ended up with the result from the meeting that they needed or hoped for.
As parents and carers , some of us are neurodivergent ourselves. A lack of inclusivity can cause those of us who are neurodivergent to find meetings even more of a struggle for various reasons.
Remember to advocate for yourselves as well as the children, and be confident to ask for things that you need to make the experience less stressful for you.
They don’t have to be detailed, and you don’t have to write down everything that is said.
It is fine to type the notes onto a mobile phone. Don’t be embarrassed to do this.
Alternatively, you could take formal notes and then use them to send over to the other people in the meeting afterwards as a record of what was discussed.
It's just whatever you feel comfortbale with.
