STAND was founded by a group of parents in East Lothian who, like many, experienced the challenges of navigating support for their neurodivergent children. Frustrated by the lack of accessible, practical guidance and understanding, we decided to create a community where families could feel supported, informed, and empowered. From these beginnings, STAND has grown into a local hub connecting families, professionals, and the wider community to champion the needs and potential of neurodivergent children.
Our work is built on three pillars: Support, Empowerment, and Inclusion. Through Support, we offer practical help to families via workshops, one-to-one guidance, and social groups, helping navigate education, healthcare, and everyday life. Empowerment means giving families and children the tools, knowledge, and confidence to thrive, advocate for themselves, and celebrate their strengths. Inclusion drives everything we do in the wider community—raising awareness, challenging stigma, and promoting acceptance so that neurodivergent individuals are valued, seen, and included in all aspects of life.
At STAND, we believe no family should feel alone on their journey. Through connection, understanding, and action, we work to make life a little easier, a little brighter, and a lot more inclusive—because together, we are stronger.
STAND simply wouldn’t be what it is without our volunteers. They are at the heart of everything we do, bringing compassion, energy, and lived experience to support families and children across East Lothian. Many of our volunteers are parents or carers of neurodivergent children themselves, which means they truly understand the challenges and triumphs that families face every day. Their empathy and commitment create a safe, welcoming space where no one feels alone.
Our volunteers help in so many ways—whether it’s running parent support groups, organising children’s activities, offering a listening ear, or helping with events and fundraising. Each person brings their own unique skills and strengths, and together they make an incredible difference in the lives of the families we support.
At STAND, we believe volunteering is a two-way street. Not only do our volunteers give their time and talents, but they also gain connection, confidence, and a strong sense of community. We provide training, guidance, and encouragement, ensuring every volunteer feels valued and supported in their role.
Thanks to our volunteers, we can live out our three pillars of Support, Empowerment, and Inclusion every single day. Their dedication is what makes STAND stronger together.
